How the Pomodoro Technique works
- Pick one task. Specific, finishable in 25 minutes if possible.
- Work for 25 minutes. No interruptions — no email, no Slack, no quick checks.
- Short break: 5 minutes. Stand up, drink water, look at something far away.
- Repeat 4 times, then take a 15-30 minute long break.
- Track interruptions. When you get distracted, mark it and return — don't restart the timer.
The technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It works because: (1) 25 minutes is short enough that you can resist distraction, and (2) the forced break prevents mental fatigue.
What this timer tracks
Task list
Queue up the work you want to focus on. Set an active task and the timer counts completed pomodoros against it.
Daily / weekly stats
See today's count, this week's count, and your all-time total at a glance.
Streak counter
Number of consecutive days with at least one completed focus session. Loses the streak if you skip a day.
Session history
Last 20 focus sessions with timestamp and associated task.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
A time-management method invented by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. You work in focused 25-minute intervals (called 'pomodoros'), separated by 5-minute breaks. After 4 pomodoros, you take a longer 15-30 minute break. The structure helps you resist distractions and prevents burnout.
Why 25 minutes?
25 minutes is long enough to make real progress but short enough that you can hold off any distraction until the timer ends. Research on attention spans suggests most people sustain deep focus for 20-45 minutes before mental fatigue sets in, so 25 is a sweet spot.
Does this timer save my stats and tasks?
Yes. Your task list, session history, and settings are saved to your browser's local storage. You can see today's count, this week's count, total all-time pomodoros, and your current streak (consecutive days with at least one focus session). Nothing is uploaded to any server.
Can I change the durations?
Yes. Customize focus length (default 25 min), short break (default 5 min), and long break (default 15 min). The long break triggers automatically after every 4 focus sessions. You can also choose your alarm sound or disable it entirely.
What if I get interrupted mid-Pomodoro?
Cirillo's rule: if an interruption is unavoidable, treat the pomodoro as void and start over. If it's a 'shall I do X later' thought, write it down on your task list, then return to the current pomodoro without restarting. This trains your brain that focus blocks are protected time.
